How to combine starchy foods properly

The combinations below are considered "safe" since they do not take a toll on the digestion.

Mixing up starchy and non-starchy foods is a good, allowable option, however, we cannot say the same thing about the combination of tomatoes and pickled foods.

Non-starchy foods:

  • tomatoes;
  • carrots;
  • cabbage;
  • peppers;
  • celery;
  • parsley;
  • zucchini;
  • leek;
  • turnip;
  • garlic;.

Bread should only be combined with salads and non-starchy veggies.

Banitsa with leek, being a typical Bulgarian meal, is a fresh option since it does not affect the normal functions of the digestive system unless the recipe includes cheese or any other protein-rich food.
